An Unexpected Treatment Option for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Treatment Option for Sleep Apnea | An Unexpected Treatment Option for Snoring and Sleep Apnea

We often make fun of snoring, but it may actually be a sign of a life-threatening disorder called sleep apnea.

This is a serious problem, but many people are unaware that we can often resolve the problem with a simple oral appliance at our Moon Valley Canyon dental office.

Why Do I Snore?

Snoring occurs because while you sleep, your tongue relaxes and falls backward, which partially blocks your airway. Your body is essentially deprived of sufficient oxygen, and as it struggles to obtain air, it creates the vibration that we call snoring.

This is just one part of several disorders we refer to as sleep apnea. Without treatment, sleep apnea can take a serious toll on your overall health, leading to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and other physical problems.

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, start by contacting your physician. Depending on the severity of your condition, he or she may opt to conduct a sleep study. In more serious cases, it may be necessary for you to wear a CPAP mask to keep your airway open while you sleep.

However, we have helped many sleep apnea patients with the use of a simple oral appliance available at our Moon Valley Canyon dental office. The customized device is worn while you sleep and looks similar to a mouth guard; however, its function is completely different. The device moves the lower jaw forward enough to keep the airway open and prevent your tongue from relaxing and blocking the airway.

We have also had success using this device to treat patients who are supposed to wear a CPAP mask but don’t do so because the mask is bulky and uncomfortable.
